How to Choose Cooling Fan Sizes for Distribution, Control and Electrical Cabinets? Don’t Just Look at the Cutout

Many people select fans only by cutout size — "as long as it fits" — only to find the cabinet still overheats and trips. Selecting cabinet cooling fans should not be based on dimensions alone: you also need to consider airflow, static pressure, power supply, protection rating, and control. Don't Just Look at the Cutout Size

Dimensions determine "if it fits", not "if it cools enough". For the same 12038 cutout, you can install a cheap 80CFM fan or a high-RPM 180CFM model — the cooling performance differs by more than 2x.

5 Key Selection Parameters

Parameter Why It Matters How to Choose
Cutout SizeDetermines if it fitsMatch the existing hole: 12038/17251 etc.
AirflowDetermines cooling capacityCalculate based on heat load, leave 20% margin
Static PressureMaintains airflow with filters/ductsChoose high-pressure model if using filters
Power SupplyAC/DC cannot be mixedControl cabinets usually AC220V, PLC cabinets may be DC24V
Protection RatingDust/water protection for workshop/outdoorWorkshop IP54, outdoor IP55

Frequently Asked Questions

If the cutout size is the same, can I swap any fan?

No. Fans of the same size can vary greatly in airflow and pressure, and the power supply may differ (AC/DC). Before swapping, confirm that voltage, airflow, and static pressure all meet requirements — otherwise you'll get overheating or power mismatch.

The cabinet already has fans but still overheats — what should I do?

First check if the airflow path is short-circuited (exhausted hot air being sucked back in), then check if the filter is clogged, and finally check if the fan airflow is insufficient. Troubleshoot step by step — don't just replace with a bigger fan.

Can I swap a 220V fan for a 24V fan?

No. 220V is AC, 24V is DC — wrong wiring will burn out the fan immediately. Control cabinets are usually 220V; PLC/instrument cabinets may be 24V DC. Always double-check.

How many fans do I need?

Small cabinets may be fine with one fan. For larger cabinets, we recommend one intake and one exhaust fan to create cross-flow — much better cooling than both fans on the same side.

Can JIEFENGFAN provide a complete set for my cabinet?

Yes. Send us your cabinet dimensions and heat load, and we'll supply the matched set: fan + filter + louver, with cutout dimensions drawn for you.
